WHEN UNCONQUERABLE IMPERFECTIONS PERSIST

Posted on April 2, 2009

I have these seemingly unconquerable imperfections -- frustratingly persistent sins.  I wish that I'd have changed more than I have over the years.  (Is anybody else with me here?  If everyone's honest, everybody's with me on this.)

But God sometimes leaves us with our certain unconquerable imperfections, author Francois Fenelon says.  Is this just an excuse to keeping sinning (Romans 6:1-4)?  Well, Fenelon thinks the reason for them, is to deprive you and me of all inward self-satisfaction.  Self-reliance, even in the matter of curing one's faults, fosters a hidden conceit -- our pride.

"So, to wound our pride, God may leave those imperfections in our life for a time, to make us humble, to cause us in frustration, to throw ourselves upon Him," author Kevin A. Miller writes.  But as we're keenly aware of our weakness, we can be encouraged by God's grace on our lives.

So, keep your chin up!  God's at work, as our unconquerable imperfections humble us.  (Read my 4/2/09 blog Uplifting Scriptures for Unconquerable Imperfections)

I quietly press on in His strength, as I wait on my appointed time of complete deliverance (Philippians 3:12-14).

As my friend, Bob Warren, puts it, I no longer think of God being up there biding His time by pulling wings off flies - just waiting around for the right moment to zap me when I screw up.  I instead know that He loves me, and I trust Him, although I don't understand all his ways (Romans 11:33-36).

UPLIFTING SCRIPTURES  FOR UNCONQUERABLE IMPERFECTIONS
by Gary Chester

I can get in a funk and bring on a gray day for myself when I can't shake a certain frustratingly persistent sin(s).

If I'm not up for battle (Eph 6:10), the enemy can kick my butt when certain unconquerable imperfections rear their heads of ugliness.  This is when I personally turn to these encouraging passages for the power of the Holy Spirit to lift my gray spirits:

1 John 3:19-20
Psalm 103:10-14
Matthew 11:28-30

These scriptures will lift you up too when you slip off the plate and start to head into a gray day.
