FEAR NOT
Posted on August 6, 2009by Clay Campbell, a Men Who Win Ministries Partner.
All of us experience fears of some sort, from time to time. But the Bible tells us more than 300 times to "fear not ".
That's a lot of "fearing not". But most of the things we fear never come to pass. Many people are just plain bent out of shape in their fears. Most of those fears are NEVER ever going to happen. Fear is really just false evidence appearing real.
* My Dad was afraid of being poisoned, because his cousin had been poisoned by a neighbor that hated him. Dad never got poisoned, so he worried his whole life over that for nothing.
* Some people fear their house will burn down. When my wife, Barbie, and I went on a date and our kids were small, on the way home she'd say, "Honey, what if we get home and the kids have set the house on fire?" I would say something very encouraging back to her like "Well now that's really stupid to be worrying about that!" Most of the time when we worry like this our fear is has no basis. When fearful thought crosses my mind like that I say, Fear knocked at the door, Faith answered and no one was there!" Psalms 56 v 3 When I am afraid, I will trust in you. 4 In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me?
*The Democrats fear the Republicans might win next time, and the Republicans fear the Democrats will screw things up so bad that no one can fix it. My best response to these things is, "God has everything all planned out and he hasn't told me the plan; but I know he's looking out for me and my family. " Psalms 1 -6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
*We worry about not being able to pay our bills. Now a least that's a more realistic fear. A favorite Bible verse of mine is Proverbs 22:7 The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. You can eradicate that fear if you have an emergency fund, you have an established plan of how to spend your money, and you implement the things these two programs show you to do.
I believe if you are going to fear something, you ought to fear not using all the talents and gifts that God has given you. In the Story of the Talents the master was very angry with the person who had buried their talent and not used it. The master called him a fool, and cast him out. Now that, you should be afraid of.
